Recent research has suggested that obesity affecting children may contribute to their feet becoming damaged, possibly resulting in loss of stability. Walking can become difficult, and balance may be affected, which may encourage slower mobility.  Alignment and the overall function of the foot may suffer, often caused by pressure the joints must endure from the additional weight. If your child is overweight, it’s important to incorporate a lifestyle consisting of dietary changes and exercise habits that promote the general well-being of the feet.

Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. If you’re an obese individual and are concerned about your feet, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Obesity and Your Feet

Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.

Problems & Complications

Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.

Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.

Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.

What’s Causing My Heel Pain?

The heel is comprised of numerous tendons, ligaments, and fatty tissue. Common causes of pain in the heel may include possible stress fractures, bursitis, and obesity, and can typically be treated with ice packs, foot massages, and exercises designed to flex the foot. Probable diagnosis may include plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and Sever’s disease. Refraining from activities that may have caused the pain not only reduces the stress on the heel, but will help in healing the tendons. This pain is commonly avoided by choosing shoes with laces for a firmer fit, discarding shoes with heels that are worn, and stretching the foot by warming up before a sports related activity. A consultation with a podiatrist is advised in properly diagnosing the cause of the pain, in addition to discovering the best treatment options available.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Prevention of Ingrown Toenails

If you’re experiencing red and swollen skin around the nails of the foot, you may have an ingrown toenail. This painful condition often causes an infection and may require removal of the nail. Typically this is caused by the toenails being improperly cut and tight shoes possibly causing pressure, cramping the toes, and cutting the skin. Observing good hygiene may be a preventive measure to aid avoiding an ingrown toenail, and this consists of changing the socks and shoes daily. Additionally, wearing open-toed sandals in warm weather may also aid in preventing this condition. When you initially realize an ingrown toenail may be present, an option for relief may be to apply a moisturizer around the nail which may soften the skin. It’s crucial to cut the toenails properly, and the method to correctly accomplish this is to cut straight across the nail so the corners can be seen. Please consider a consultation with a podiatrist for a proper evaluation, to learn how to trim the toenails correctly, and to fix your ingrown toenail.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

How to Choose Shoes That Fit Well

Several foot conditions may originate from shoes that fit incorrectly. Hammertoes, corns, and bunions are among the ailments that may develop from shoes fitting improperly. Additionally, imbalances involving the body’s muscles may be affected, possibly allowing the knees and hips to become injured. A natural fit occurs when the foot can move freely and is uninhibited by things such as excess material that the shoe may have. When the foot lands on the ground, an ideal fit would allow the foot to expand naturally. Some tips on choosing shoes that fit properly include trying shoes on at the end of the day, when the feet are the largest, and wearing socks that are frequently worn with the shoe. Avoiding carpeted surfaces while trying shoes on is recommended, in addition to taking the time to try running in the shoe to see how it feels.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

How to Treat Corns

When the skin on the foot rubs against a shoe, there is a chance a corn will develop. Typically, the pressure from this causes the skin to thicken; this may produce extreme pain, affecting the deeper layers of the skin. Corns that affect the area in between the toes are referred to as soft corns, and moisture from the toes may be the underlying reason for this condition. Occasionally, corns may develop on the soles of the feet, most likely caused by running or walking. There may be several treatment options available, including having a podiatrist trim the corn down, which will ease the pressure. Utilizing Exercises to Help Treat Heel Spurs

Heel spurs are bony protrusions that can be caused by calcium deposits on the bottom of the heel bone. They can be very painful to live with. There are some exercises that may help with the pain; it is recommended, however, that you ask your podiatrist if exercising is right for you. The towel exercise is done by trying to grip a towel on the ground with your toes and bringing it closer to your body while keeping your feet in place. Another good foot exercise is a belt stretch. Utilizing a belt, lay on your back with your legs extended and grab each end of the it while placing the middle on the bottom of your feet. Pull the belt towards you while you push against it. Rolling a tennis ball under your foot is a good way to stretch and relax the muscles. A water bottle works in a similar way, and a frozen water bottle can help provide additional relief. Following these exercises—in addition to practicing a healthy diet, wearing comfortable shoes, and losing weight if you are overweight—can all help provide relief from heel spurs.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

If you have any questions feel free to contact our office located in Lake Worth, FL . We offer the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology to meet your needs.
