Heel and Arch Pain

Heel pain can be a common ailment that many runners and joggers experience. It may become so severe that it can interrupt daily activities. People who participate in sporting activities that involve running and jumping may develop plantar fasciitis. This is a medical condition that affects the bottom of the foot, and pain is often felt in the heel and arch areas. The portion of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel to the toes, is referred to as the plantar fascia. If this becomes inflamed or torn, it can produce severe pain and discomfort. One of the first signs many patients notice is foot pain after arising in the morning. Mild relief may be found when appropriate stretches are performed. If you are afflicted with plantar fasciitis, it is strongly recommended that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can guide you toward the proper treatment.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff  from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

The injury happened during the game against Miami, and the Mavericks lost during overtime with a score of 122-118. His injury was a significant factor in losing points for the team. The injury occurred when his right foot landed on the foot of another player. This is the first game he has currently not been able to play in, and has missed ten games in his rookie season as a result of minor injuries.

Many people worldwide are familiar with heel pain. The heel typically absorbs the weight of the body, and can endure significant damage if there is an injury involved. A common form of heel pain can come from plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the plantar fascia. This is a band of tissue that is located at the bottom of the foot, and connects the heel to the toes. This type of pain generally develops gradually, and can come from standing for the majority of the day. Sever’s disease affects teenagers, and targets the growth plate in the heel. This can cause considerable pain and discomfort. The condition that is referred to as tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by a compressed nerve that is inside the ankle. The symptoms that patients notice can include a burning or tingling sensation underneath the heel. If you are experiencing any type of heel pain, it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist as quickly as possible so the correct treatment can begin.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

There are many ways to prevent falling in the home. Research has indicated that falling can be a common occurrence among elderly people, which is why it is important for them to implement steps to better prevent this from occurring. It is beneficial to walk at a slower pace, in addition to wearing shoes that fit properly. These types of shoes can include footwear that has a non-slip sole, closed toes, and a cushioned heel area. It may also be helpful to discard older rugs that may have become worn, and to secure any existing rugs to the floor. Many patients also find it useful to install grab bars in the shower and toilet area, which may help in maintaining balance. Additionally, it is wise to have regular eye exams and to improve the lighting in the house in order to help prevent tripping over any potential falling hazards. If you would like general knowledge on the dangers of falling, please consult with a podiatrist who can provide information about how falling can affect the feet.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Are Bunions Affecting Your Everyday Life?

Have you noticed a bony protrusion on the side of your big toe? If so, you may have developed the foot condition known as a bunion. Don't let bunions interfere with your daily activities.

How to Check If You Have a Bunion

Bunions are a particularly painful type of foot condition that form on the side of the feet. If you are experiencing foot pain, there are a few steps you can take in order to determine if a bunion is the cause of the discomfort. You may begin by examining your feet to look for a bony lump, or protrusion on the side of your big toe. Next, you’ll want to determine if your big toe is pointing, or leaning towards the rest of your toes. Lastly, you’ll want to check if the skin on the lump is hard, red or swollen. If you notice that all of the above are true to your case, it is very likely that you have a bunion. To relieve the pain of a bunion, it is recommended that you wear shoes wider than normal, ice the affected area on and off, look into wearing bunion pads to prevent further friction with your footwear, and try to keep the weight off of the affected area. Bunions are likely to worsen overtime, which is why we recommend you speak with a podiatrist for professional guidance and a suggested treatment plan.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Who Does Sever’s Disease Affect?

If you have a teenager that frequently participates in sporting activities, it is beneficial to be informed about Sever’s disease. Your child may be experiencing the symptoms of Sever’s disease if you notice they are limping, or talking about heel pain. The most common age range this condition occurs in is typically between the ages of eight and fourteen. It occurs during growth spurts when the bones grow at a faster rate than the tendons. The symptoms many teenagers complain about can consist of heel pain while walking, and difficulty participating in activities that include running and jumping. Moderate relief may be found when the affected foot is kept elevated. Other patients have also found it beneficial to stretch the calf muscles. Additionally, wearing shoes that have adequate cushioning may help the foot to feel stable. If you feel your child has Sever’s disease, it is strongly advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can recommend the proper treatment.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
