Can You Pinch a Nerve in Your Foot?

Pinched nerves occur when excessive pressure is placed on a nerve by the surrounding tissues. This can happen in the feet due to an injury, from wearing poorly fitted shoes, or from having flat feet, bone spurs, or arthritis, among many other possible causes. A pinched nerve can cause a variety of symptoms, including aching, sharp, or burning pain, numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” sensation in the affected foot, along with muscle weakness. The symptoms can occur on the bottom of your foot, at your heel, or in the ball of your foot. Nerve pain may radiate out to the arch or toes. To learn more about pinched nerves in the feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Early Signs of Arthritis in Feet

Arthritis causes inflammation and stiffness in the joints. There are many different types of arthritis, but the types of arthritis that most often affect the feet are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and gout. Arthritis progressively worsens over time, but the earlier it is detected, the sooner measures can be taken to slow its progression and preserve the health of your feet. The earliest signs of arthritis are joint stiffness, pain, swelling, and warmth. Sometimes the joints may begin to appear deformed or develop bone spurs. If you suspect that you may have arthritis in your feet, please consult with a podiatrist, who can help you manage this condition.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Lake Worth, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are the Symptoms of Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a common ailment among diabetic patients that can be connected to elevated blood sugar levels and can injure the nerves in the feet. Symptoms that are generally felt with neuropathy can include a numbness and tingling sensation in the feet, and it is often difficult to feel existing cuts and bruises. A loss of balance can also be a result of neuropathy. It is beneficial to treat this condition by implementing healthy daily eating habits, which may help to control high insulin levels. If you have numbness in your feet, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist who can properly diagnose neuropathy.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Lake Worth, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Where Do Corns Develop?

Many people overlook the importance of taking care of their feet. This can include wearing shoes and socks that do not fit correctly. Excessive friction between the toes and the shoe may cause corns, which can be quite uncomfortable. Corns are  small areas of hardened flesh that can appear on top of the toes and on the bottom of the foot. A soft corn generally develops between the toes, and has the possibility of becoming infected. Patients may find it beneficial to wear cushioned pads over existing corns on top of the toes. This may help to alleviate a portion of the pain that is associated with corns. If you have developed corns on any part of your foot, please speak with a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Lake Worth, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms

A trapped tibial nerve in the tarsal tunnel may be indicative of tarsal tunnel syndrome. This condition can cause pain and discomfort, and may lead to unpleasant sensations in the foot. Overall movement of the affected foot may weaken as well. This condition can develop as a result of a foot injury, or from genetic factors that can cause the ankle to become unstable. Common symptoms that patients may experience can include swelling, a burning or tingling sensation, and numbness in the toes. Mild relief may be found when custom made orthotics are worn, as this can help to alleviate a portion of the pain. If you are experiencing foot pain, a podiatrist can diagnose your condition and offer you effective treatment options.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

What Are Recurrent Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures are small cracks in a bone and often affect the bones of the feet, ankles, and lower legs. Unlike an acute fracture, which occurs due to a one-time injury, a stress fracture develops slowly and is caused by the affected bone’s inability to bear the load placed on it. Engaging in repetitive activities that place excess pressure on the bones, such as running, can make stress fractures more likely. In a recurrent stress fracture, the affected bone heals, but then breaks again. An estimated 60% of athletes who have had one stress fracture go on to sustain additional stress fractures. If you have fractured any bone, it is important to get treatment and to give the bone adequate time to heal following an injury. For more information about recurrent stress fractures, please consult with a podiatrist.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Are You Suffering From Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot, called the plantar fascia, becomes inflamed. Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the heel, which is usually worse in the morning, after prolonged standing, or after an intense workout. It can also be associated with a heel spur, which occurs as a spike of bone that points out from the heel bone. Common risk factors for developing plantar fasciitis include playing sports that put stress on the heel bone, being flat footed, being middle-aged, obesity, pregnancy, and spending a lot of time on your feet. Common methods of relief include taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, resting the foot, and wearing proper footwear or orthotics. If you are suffering from heel pain, don't hesitate to speak with a podiatrist.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff  from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Lake Worth, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

When Should I See a Foot and Ankle Surgeon?

Most injuries and diseases of the foot and ankle are not treated surgically. However, a foot and ankle surgeon can still help you by examining your feet and ankles when you experience pain or other symptoms of injury or disease. You may want to consult a foot and ankle surgeon if you have sustained an injury, such as a sprain or fracture, have a medical condition that can affect the feet, have difficulty completing daily activities, or notice a change in the appearance of your feet or ankles. Foot and ankle surgeons tend to only suggest surgery when a problem is severe and non-surgical treatments have failed. For more information about how a foot and ankle surgeon may be able to help you, please consult with a podiatrist.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.
