Trevor Bauer Injures Ankle

Although the Cleveland Indians have little to worry about in their pursuit of another division title, the team will unfortunately have to do without starter Trevor Bauer for a short period of time. The pitcher suffered an ankle injury when he was struck by a line drive in a game against the Chicago White Sox. After he was hit, Bauer was seen in a recoiled position grabbing onto his leg. When the game ended, the pitcher was still seen limping around the clubhouse; however, manager Terry Francona expects Bauer to be able to make his next start against Baltimore. The specific injury that Bauer was diagnosed with was an ankle contusion, which is far less severe than a fracture or sprain. If you are suffering from ankle pain and are looking for treatment, it may be best to make an appointment with your podiatrist.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Can Toenail Fungus Be Prevented?

Many people are unaware that they may have toenail fungus, and this may often be a result of a lack of pain and discomfort. Common symptoms that are associated with this ailment may include the toenail becoming dry and brittle, the nail appearing yellow and thick, or a separation from the nail and the nail bed. It’s important to take proper care of your feet, which may possibly avoid this unsightly condition from developing. There are several ways to accomplish this, including wearing shoes that fit properly, trimming the toenails correctly, and wearing appropriate shoes in the shower and pool areas. If you are afflicted with toenail fungus, it’s suggested to speak with a podiatrist who can provide proper guidance for the best treatment options.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

Blue Jays Outfielder Suffers Ankle Sprain

Outfielder Lourdes Gurriel of the Toronto Blue Jays suffered both a knee contusion and an ankle sprain during a game against the Chicago White Sox. The injury occurred on a play where the outfielder twisted himself to avoid a tag at second base. When he attempted to slide, his left cleat caught on the dirt, forcing him to bend his knee and ankle awkwardly. After the play, it was obvious that Gurriel was in serious pain. Although initial x-rays were negative, Gurriel is expected to undergo an MRI for his ankle to determine if he suffered any further soft tissue damage. When asked about the outfielder, manager John Gibbons stated, “It looked like it was something very serious but he’s moving around okay. I’m sure it’ll tighten up on him and swell up on him. I think it’s already swelling, his ankle.” If you are experiencing symptoms from an ankle sprain and are seeking treatment, contact your podiatrist right away.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
