How to Strengthen Your Feet

Strengthening exercises are very beneficial for runners who are constantly on their feet. These exercises should be done three or four days a week. A good exercise is to lay your feet flat on the ground, while lifting only the big toe. This should be repeated ten times. Next, try this same exercise except lift the rest of the toes while laying the big toe flat. Now, repeat this ten times. Another helpful exercise is to pick up marbles from the ground by curling your toes. Try to fill a small cup with all of the marbles and then try the same exercise with your other foot.

All runners should take extra precaution when trying to avoid injury. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff of Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

There are a lot of mistakes a runner can make prior to a workout that can induce injury. A lot of athletes tend to overstretch before running, instead of saving those workouts for a post-run routine. Deep lunges and hand-to-toe hamstring pulls should be performed after a workout instead of during a warmup. Another common mistake is jumping into an intense routine before your body is physically prepared for it. You should try to ease your way into long-distance running instead of forcing yourself to rush into it.

More Tips for Preventing Injury

  • Incorporate Strength Training into Workouts - This will help improve the body’s overall athleticism
  • Improve and Maintain Your Flexibility – Stretching everyday will help improve overall performance
  • “Warm Up” Before Running and “Cool Down” Afterward – A warm up of 5-10 minutes helps get rid of lactic acid in the muscles and prevents delayed muscle soreness
  • Cross-Training is Crucial
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Have a Formal Gait Analysis – Poor biomechanics can easily cause injury

Red Sox Pitcher Sprains Ankle

Lefty pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez of the Boston Red Sox was recently placed on the 10-day disabled list due to an ankle sprain. Rodriguez suffered the injury when he tumbled to the ground while trying to cover first base in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Rodriguez has pitched to a respectable 3.44 ERA and his injury will be a significant loss for the first place Red Sox. The team has activated left-hander Brian Johnson from the disabled list to fill Rodriguez’s spot on the active roster.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Exercises for Foot Pain

Foot pain is commonly experienced by those who stand for long periods of time in uncomfortable shoes. This is why it is beneficial to perform foot exercises to alleviate the stresses and pains from standing all day. One of the best ways to exercise your feet is by doing ball rolls. To perform this exercise, you will need to sit down in a chair and put a tennis ball beneath your foot. Next, move the ball back and forth between your heel and the ball of your foot for thirty seconds. Another exercise you can do is a foot flex. This is done by sitting down, crossing your legs, and sliding your fingers between your toes. Afterward, rotate your ankles in a circle before flexing your foot in both directions. This exercise should be done for approximately one minute on each foot.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Kevin H. Lapoff from Lake Worth Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Elderly people may develop conditions concerning the feet as they age. Jorge Soler Suffers from Foot Fracture

The Royals will have to play the next few weeks without their outfielder Jorge Soler. Soler recently fractured his left first metatarsal when he tripped running out of the batter’s box during a game. The injury hasn’t been ruled severe enough to require surgery, but the Royals are expected to re-evaluate the fracture soon. Fortunately, there is a possibility that the break may heal on its own. However, if Soler’s CT scan reveals a further separation of bones, surgery may be necessary. Soler is expected to be placed on the disabled list very soon and he will most likely be out of gameplay until August. Soler’s injury will be a monumental loss for an already struggling Kansas City Royals team. If you suspect that you have a fracture in your foot, you should consult with your podiatrist right away.
